European Championships 2021
The situation is unfortunately familiar, especially to Finns. The last time Eriksen touched the surface of the field was in the European Football Championship in 2021 in a match against Finland.
At that time, Eriksen’s heart stopped in the middle of the match. The Dane collapsed on the field, and soon his teammates and medical staff came to him. Teammates surround Eriksen, forming a visual barrier around him.
Eriksen was resuscitated, and his heart was restarted after one shock from the defibrillator.
– We were called to the field when Christian got sick. I didn’t see it myself, but it was clear that he was unconscious, the Danish national team doctor Morten Boesen described the events of 2021.
– When I got to him, he was lying on his side. He was breathing and I could feel a pulse, but the situation changed quickly and as everyone could see, we started CPR.
Christian Eriksen was able to continue his career with the help of a pacemaker. PDO
The match between Finland and Denmark was suspended, but resumed later the same day.
The Danish star spent several days in the hospital. After the incident on Saturday, he said on Monday that he was fine considering the circumstances.
– Thank you, I’m not going to give up. I’m better now, but I want to understand what happened. I want to thank you all for what you did for me, the Danish star commented to the Italian Gazzetta dello Sport at the time.
Eriksen played for the Italian club Inter in the 2020–2021 season.
Pacemaker saved?
After the incident, Eriksen was fitted with a pacemaker. According to the Swedish Heart Association, the pacemaker can act like a defibrillator, i.e. deliver an electric shock that stops the arrhythmia. With the help of its wires, the device detects a dangerous heart arrhythmia.
Eriksen has been able to continue his career despite the incident. In September 2025, Eriksen signed a two-year contract with the German club VfL Wolfsburg.
