Because the last throw of the game hit the post and not into the goal, GWD Minden became the second team to be relegated from the Handball Bundesliga.
The promoted team lost its last game of the season at SC DHfK Leipzig 25:26 (14:18). The bottom of the table from Saxony takes the East Westphalia team into the second league. For the two-time German champions from Minden, it is the sixth relegation in the club’s history.
It was a dramatic decline. Right winger Jakub Sterba had the equalizer for Minden in the last action of the game. The Czech’s last throw landed on the post of the Leipzig goal. A draw would have been enough for Minden, as HSG Wetzlar lost their home game against the new German champions SC Magdeburg 30:31 (17:17). So the better goal difference decided in favor of Central Hesse, tied with 17:51 points.
HBW Balingen-Weilstetten and SG BBM Bietigheim will take the places of Leipzig and Minden in the new season. Balingen secured the title in the lower house on the last match day on Saturday with a 36:22 (17:19) victory over Bietigheim.
