An incident occurred at the Ironman in Hamburg. There were several metal splinters on the asphalt on a section of the bike route. According to the police, these were tiny, millimeter-sized parts.
The police said that around 50 participants were stopped due to defective bikes. According to media reports, up to 150 triathletes had to interrupt their race. The professional field was not affected. The European Championship title for women is awarded as part of the Ironman.
The police employee did not want to say anything about the background. He called speculation that it was an attack “speculation.” When asked by the “Hamburger Abendblatt”, the police situation service said whether the metal splinters had been deliberately scattered onto the street is still the subject of investigations. According to a report in Triathlon magazine, there were protests from local residents during the competition. There were sayings like “You are robbing us of our freedom” written on house walls.
