Angela de Jong and Johnny de Mol in one studio: it happened last week on Goedemorgen Nederland, but most people will have missed that. Did it get awkward? That’s for sure. “Embarrassing!”

Angela de Jong and Johnny de Mol are not exactly each other’s best friends, but they recently had to sit next to each other in Good morning Netherlands. The coldness was clearly palpable between the woman who barked at him for years in her AD columns and John de Mol’s troubled son. And there was also a verbal clash in the studio.

Lots of criticism

It starts when Johnny is asked that he is going to fill in for De Oranjezomer again. “Yes, why not? It is Hélène’s program and she cannot do it all summer. Then someone can fill it in. I am at the bottom of the pecking order, but I am the first to say no.”

There was a lot of criticism about that raid last year. “Well, that wasn’t too bad. Yeah, man.”

Sour column

Host Frank van Leeuwen then builds a bridge to fellow guest Angela. “There was just someone who wrote such a sour column in the AD, and you think: does it have to be so sour, right?”

Johnny: “Then we had the best viewing figures every time that evening! Hahaha. People still want to watch!”

Angela: “Yes, that’s why it was really that bad!”

Deep pity

One of Angela’s most spicy columns? The piece with the headline: ‘I can’t get annoyed anymore, as a viewer you can only feel deeply sorry for Johnny de Mol’.

Johnny: “She has empathy!”

Angela: “Yes, that’s why. Yes, I mean: I understand that you want to take revenge and you have already explained a few times in the past few weeks that you really weren’t feeling well at the time, so that you really weren’t there, but you also saw that as a viewer, because you didn’t remember the names of your guests, discussions went by where I sometimes thought: hello, Johnny, are you still there?”

Forgot name

Johnny thinks it’s exaggerated. “Yes, I forgot Ingrid Coenradie’s name once while she was sitting next to me.”

Angela: “Yes, it is embarrassing!”

Frank: “Has this been discussed? Do we need anything else…”

Johnny: “Yes, as far as I’m concerned.”

Own function

Angela and Johnny are not interested in mediation. She: “Yes, you both have your own position in the media landscape, right, I think? I’m not there to make sweet cakes and say: ‘Yes, what’s going on with Johnny, because he’s doing so poorly.’”

And he: “We are just going to be as prepared as possible with everything we do. I am indeed a bit more comfortable in the competition and that saves me a sip on a drink. But last year we were the most watched talk show of the entire summer, so in the end the viewer is of course always right and they have not let me down yet.”
