Shock at Frankfurt Airport: Several employees of Lufthansa and partner companies were injured when the nose landing gear of a Dreamliner suddenly collapsed.

After the serious breakdown of a Boeing Dreamliner at Frankfurt Airport, research into the cause is in full swing. On Thursday afternoon around 12:45 p.m., the nose gear of a Lufthansa aircraft unexpectedly collapsed at the A15 boarding position in front of Terminal 1. The long-haul Boeing 787-9 aircraft was scheduled to fly to Los Angeles under flight number LH450, with scheduled departure for 1:50 p.m.

Passengers narrowly escape the accident

What was very fortunate about the incident was that there were no passengers on the plane at the time of the accident. Since boarding for this long-haul flight usually takes around 30 minutes, the first passengers would not have boarded until around 1:15 p.m. and therefore only half an hour later. Instead, a 13-person Lufthansa crew and an unspecified number of employees from service companies were busy preparing the aircraft for the flight at this point.

Injured employees and the all-clear in the evening

In the incident, two Lufthansa cabin employees and several employees from partner companies were injured and had to be taken to a hospital for medical treatment. As the airline announced in the evening, the injured Lufthansa employees have now been able to leave the hospital. The remaining crew members were looked after and their journey home was organized. The airline did not provide any precise information about the severity of the injuries or the exact number of injured service providers.

Video documents severe damage to the aircraft

Photos and a video on Platform X that Lufthansa classified as authentic document the extent of the incident. The video shows the nose of the plane suddenly dropping forward while a ground worker stands right next to it. Parts break off and fly to the side. The impact caused the fuselage to tip extremely forward, while the tail protruded upwards, even though the passenger boarding bridge was already in contact with the plane. The machine was badly damaged as a result of the incident.

Experts start investigating the causes

A crisis team was immediately set up and technicians and experts began work on site. After clearance from the investigative authorities, the damaged Dreamliner was to be towed to a technical hall for further investigations and subsequent repairs. According to the airport operator Fraport, the incident fortunately had no major impact on other flight operations.

The Dreamliner in the Lufthansa fleet

The breakdown in a Lufthansa Dreamliner, whose nose landing gear suddenly collapsed at the gate at Frankfurt Airport on Thursday, has no immediate impact on the planned delivery of further Boeing 787 aircraft to the Lufthansa Group. The authorities are currently investigating the incident, so nothing can be said about its cause and no conclusions can be drawn about the delivery of further 787s, a Lufthansa spokesman said when asked. The Federal Aircraft Accident Investigation Office has begun investigating the incident. Lufthansa is supporting the investigation, the company also announced.

The affected Boeing 787 has been in scheduled service with Lufthansa since February. The company currently has a total of 17 Boeing 787s in service, the spokesman said. At the end of 2025 there were 14 machines of this type

Boeing shares lost 0.56 percent to $216.20 on the NYSE. The Lufthansa share, on the other hand, is trading 0.9 percent lower in XETRA trading at 8.38 euros.
