We have already had the first heat wave of the year, but the meteorological summer really starts on Monday. Anyone hoping for a flying, sun-drenched start will be disappointed. We will first get a good load of rain and thunderstorms next week, before summer really starts.
Monday is another exception; it will be a sunny day, with maximum temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees. A few light showers are possible later in the day, but it will remain dry in most places.
A sultry night follows, during which it remains very warm in some places at 18 degrees. And then, from Tuesday morning, the weather changes and the first heavier showers fall. It feels swelteringly warm.
20 millimeters
A larger area of precipitation will move across the country on Tuesday afternoon, with at least 20 millimeters of rain falling in some places. These showers are accompanied by thunder and heavy wind gusts of about 75 kilometers per hour.
After these showers the wind turns to the west. This creates much colder air than we have been used to recently. Wednesday and Thursday will again be downright wet days, with a lot of wind and temperatures around 18 degrees.
The changeable weather will also continue on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but there will be a little more room for the sun.
East winds ensure a dry month
For those who are already homesick for beach weather, there is good news: it will be warmer again after next weekend. The wind will blow from the east and that will provide warm and dry air for the rest of the month of June.
“We will see this pattern more and more often in the summers of the future. Due to greenhouse gas emissions, it will become increasingly warmer and wind patterns will also change. It is expected that the wind will blow more often from the east in future summers, which will not only make it warmer, but also drier than before,” says meteorologist Verena Mülder of Weeronline.
