Danish cycling star Jonas Vingegaard has won the 109th edition of the Giro d’Italia. The 29-year-old was one of eight professionals to win all three major tours.
Vingegaard won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023, and last year he celebrated overall victory at the Spanish Vuelta.
Vingegaard now belongs to the illustrious group of Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Alberto Contador, Vincenzo Nibali and Chris Froome, who have won each of the three tours at least once.
Vingegaard will soon be back at the Tour de France
After the final 21st stage in Rome, Vingegaard is in the overall standings with a clear lead of 5:22 minutes over the Austrian Felix Gall and 6:25 minutes over the Australian Jai Hindley from the German Red Bull team. The Italian Jonathan Milan took the day’s victory in the sprint and celebrated a home win.
Vingegaard’s great long-term rival Tadej Pogacar did not take part in the Tour of Italy this year. The two exceptional riders will meet again at the 113th edition of the Tour de France at the Grand Départ in Barcelona, which begins on July 4th. Florian Lipowitz, who came third on the German tour last year, will also be competing there.
