The 95-year-old GDR cycling star Täve Schur makes one of his last major public appearances. He leaves a lasting impression on the organizational team – in an unexpected way.
Former GDR cycling star Täve Schur made one of his last major public appearances at the 25th Bikeschmiede Festival in Osterwieck in the Harz Mountains. The 95-year-old attracted numerous visitors and left a special impression on the organizing team.
Schur is one of the most famous athletes in the GDR. He won the International Peace Tour twice and took part in the Olympic Games. Last year, the state of Saxony-Anhalt awarded him the State Order of Merit.
Schur was faster “than the young guard”
As the organizers announced, the former professional cyclist showed up on time despite his age and thrilled the audience. One organizer said: “He was up on the Panzerbike faster than us, the young guard.”
One of the attractions at the festival was the Panzerbike – a motorcycle with a displacement of 38,000 cubic centimeters. The meeting attracted motorcycle fans to Osterwieck with historical machines, special exhibitions, demonstrations and a parts market.
