Handball Bundesliga team SG Flensburg-Handewitt won the game for third place at the Final Four in Hamburg for the European League. The dethroned defending champion beat Montpellier HB 32:30 (16:16) on Sunday afternoon.
Thanks to their success in the duel between last year’s two finalists, the Schleswig-Holstein team secured a bonus of 50,000 euros. However, that is only a small consolation for the SG, who were aiming for a hat-trick of titles on the Elbe.
Ironically, arch-rival THW Kiel could now inherit Flensburg as European League winners if they manage to win against MT Melsungen in the final (6 p.m., in the live center at NDR.de).
Flensburg with the greater reserves of strength
Right from the start, Flensburg appeared to have recovered well from the semi-final defeat the day before against MT Melsungen. Even a red card against Niclas Kirkelökke (6th), who hit Valentin Porte in the face, initially did not weaken the SG. The Bundesliga team temporarily moved ahead by four goals (16:12/25th), before a drop in performance in the final phase of the first half ensured that the French were able to equalize.
After halftime, the spectators in the multi-purpose hall in the Volkspark saw a duel at eye level for a long time. In the final phase, Flensburg had greater reserves of strength and took a decisive lead to 31:27 three minutes before the end. The most successful shooter for the North Germans was Simon Pytlick with seven goals. Zvonimir Srna scored most often for Montpellier (six goals).
THW Kiel meets Melsungen in the final
In the final, the German record champions Kiel, who beat Montpellier on Saturday, will face Melsungen. In the current Bundesliga season, both teams played two hard-fought games, in which the “Zebras” initially prevailed at home with 31:29. In Kassel, the North Germans lost 29:30 in the second half of the season. With a final victory, the MT would win the first major title ever in the club’s history.
