I don’t see it that way at all.

First of all: What is the role of GF Sport with us? We brought Schwegler as SD and Englert from RB into the squad. He sits above them and will certainly also have a say. But he doesn’t do the actual management work with the men.

We have to be ready for the dirty fight in the second league in just under 12 weeks. To do this, we still have to look for a coach and put together almost a completely new team that, in the best case scenario, can achieve direct promotion again.
Hecking has been there for the last few weeks: He knows our problems and was involved in the internal affairs of the last few weeks. He also knows our fundamental problems from his first term in office. He doesn’t need any training time and knows his way around. Ultimately, the VFL is close to his heart.

The last external player has just agreed on his severance payment with the VFL. He could only talk, he didn’t act. An external person also needs time to get used to it (we don’t have it at the moment!), he may not know the German leagues or the 2nd league (it’s brutal) and he doesn’t know our “internal” problems. He only knows the criticism from the rest of Germany. But he also doesn’t know the criticism that has been coming from his own fan base for years. So we fundamentally need a man who will give the club a face in the long term, a philosophy of what we want to stand for. Until now, people have thought that money can buy everything and if that goes wrong, we’ll put money on the table again in the winter and everything will be fine. Things can’t continue like this in the long term…

Now we really need cohesion in the club again. We will have various home games that feel like away games: Hanover, Braunschweig and Magdeburg alone will fill the place for us. There’s also Dresden and co! There’s a lot going on in the second league…

With his style, Hecking can moderate things well and I believe in him that he can initiate the right things. Will he still have the job in 2030? I don’t believe. Therefore only a contract until 2028.
But as I said, I trust him to be able to stabilize us in the short term and initiate the necessary processes, that he doesn’t just talk like Christiansen, but that he also acts according to his words.

There is also the question of who would have been available for us and who would have been the right man for the necessary change. As I said: Not only does a powerful second division team have to be put together, an entire club has to be completely taken apart and put back together again. I think for this task you need a bit of emotion for the VFL.
Schäfrer was discussed as a 1A solution for a long time. According to the Bild article, it was clear for a long time that he canceled.
What the status was at Wohlgemuth, I have no idea. But just the rumored €250,000 per month for him and then he brings his entourage with him, that would be the next megalomania…

So who else would have been an alternative who would have tackled this major task with passion?

As already written above: Schwegler is primarily responsible for the squad. Can he do that? We don’t know yet because Christiansen didn’t have anything prepared in the winter and he then made two emergency purchases and one loan. Belocian was really good and important. The two emergency purchases with Adjetey and Shiogai… You didn’t have to make them. I blame him for that. Let’s hope that at least Shiogai will still be important once he’s really arrived.
But that’s why they provided him with a squad planner.
