Nicknamed “Il Maestro”, he was part of the Ragni di Lecco. He disappeared on November 14, 2023 near Sondrio. The remains found by a hiker

After almost three years, the body of Mario Conti was found, a great mountaineer, one of the Ragni di Lecco who – together with Casimiro Ferrari, Pino Negri and Daniele Chiappa – in January 1974 conquered the summit of the iconic Cerro Torre in Patagonia by climbing the West Face, and the following year the Lhotse in the Himalayas. Conti’s lifeless body was found Thursday morning by a hiker in a ravine a few kilometers away from where he lived in the woods in the Mossini area, a hamlet of Sondrio. Conti, nicknamed “Il Maestro” by “his” Ragni di Lecco, passed away on 14 November 2023 at the age of 79. Immediately after his disappearance, teams of specialists organized extensive searches to search for him.

The news of the discovery of the body and the recognition of the remains was given by the Ragni di Lecco. “It is difficult to say what emotions this news arouses in all of us, it certainly renews the sense of sadness and lack for a loss that can never be filled but, in other respects, it also represents the closing of a circle, the end of a time suspended between anguish, doubts and unanswered questions – report the Ragni di Lecco -. What we know for sure is that Mario has always been here beside us and still is because his friendship, his indissoluble bond with the group, and the teachings he has transmitted are always present to the young generations of Ragni”.
