Well-known star chef Nick Bril (42) breaks the silence in ‘Nieuwsblad’ after more than two years about the accident that destroyed the life of his intern Joe Claridge (39). “I often feel like a loser.”

In January 2024, Bril ran over his British employee after a drink in his then restaurant ‘The Jane’, causing him to lose both legs. In an interview, the chef now looks back on the night in question and his deep mental crash in the aftermath.

The judge recently sentenced Nick Bril to twelve months’ suspended prison sentence and a three-month driving ban for, among other things, culpable absenteeism and intoxicated driving (1.67 per mille).

“I had indeed been drinking and got into my car. That was my biggest mistake,” says the chef in ‘Nieuwsblad’.

He says that he remained in Belgium in the aftermath of the accident and did not flee abroad solely due to the unconditional support of his wife Francheska and his children. “I have often felt like a loser. Without my wife I would certainly have moved abroad, but in a way that is also running away from your responsibility,” he admits.
