The Granata patron at the Dogliani TV Festival: “We are reflecting, we haven’t decided, but we will do so within a week. Ventura? He will be one of our managers at 50%. Sell the club? Willing to step aside as long as the buyer has a passion for the club”
The timing yes, but above all the profile. The identikit of the next Toro coach emerges from Dogliani: “I would like a coach who has the qualities to develop young people and to play a good game”, says the president, Urbano Cairo, from the stage of the TV Festivalwhile talking to the journalist Mario Giordano. We won’t have to wait long, because “we will decide it within a week – he continues -, choosing the coach is fundamental in all teams but even more so at Toro”. Since the championship ended on Sunday with the derby, the club’s reflection phase has begun. And consultations. “We are thinking about everyone, we have had some meetings – explains the club’s number one -: we are also reflecting on our coach (D’Aversa, ed.), who has achieved good results. Next week we will reach a decision. Now I cannot say who the coach will be, as we have not yet decided”. On stage Giordano asks him if a decision has been made on Gian Piero Ventura’s possible return to Toro in a managerial role: “50%”, he replies. There is time to take a quick assessment of the season that has just ended. “We had a decent championship, which started badly but ended much better with some good results and some nice victories. And also with a nice comeback derby on the last day, which I’m happy with. It wasn’t the season I expected, and for which I had also invested quite a bit. But now we have to try to do better next year.”
the club

On the Dogliani stage there is a lot of talk about Toro, on the other hand it is known that Giordano is a Granata fan. Not only the chapter relating to the next coach, the topic of the club’s future is also touched upon. “I’ve said it many times already and I repeat it: I’m very willing to step aside if there were someone who comes along and makes an offer, and I’m not talking about who knows what offer… The important thing is that I realize that this group or this person has a passion for the Bull. One of my sons always tells me: ‘dad, sell the Bull, the time has come after twenty years'”. He adds: “There is no problem on my part, I am therefore very willing to step aside. Of course I will be sorry, because I would not sell and I think I can do well with Toro, as has often been done in recent years. But to date I have not received any offers: who knows, we will find someone abroad, I think we will find them there.”
two decades
—
The last two decades of Taurus have been under the sign of Cairo. “We have done many important things – he says -. Since we returned to Serie A in 2012 we have had 14 consecutive championships in Serie A, the next one will be the fifteenth. Like us, only nine other teams have succeeded, the usual ones: the others have gone up and down a bit with Serie B. We have had results mainly from the left side of the table, entering Europe twice and often fighting for a place in Europe. I was committed to the rebirth of the Philadelphiawhich was horrible and full of rubbish: I put 2.5 million into it as a non-refundable loan out of the total of 8-9 million, and it was inaugurated in 2017. Now I have built a very nice sports center for the youth teams, the Robaldowhich cost me ten million. The youth sector won a lot. In my first eight years I put 60 million of my own money into Toro, despite the capital gains, to break even. Then in the Ventura years we recovered the 60 million but I left them in the Bull without ever withdrawing them. Then I wanted to invest a lot in the players and with Covid I lost another 50-60 million. Finally, with Juric we recovered our positioning and developed players, but I never earned a cent from it.”
the TV

There is a lot of talk about television which “in Italy is in good health, and is growing. For example, La7Cinema is making important numbers: it started from scratch, today it has a prime time of 0.8-0.9%. I like TV today, just as I like La7 and the programs of the other networks”. Would Cairo be interested in politics? “I don’t dream of Palazzo Chigi. Being in politics is a completely different thing from being an entrepreneur. As a kid I liked politics very much, I have a lot of passion for politics. There are some polls, even with good results. But I see it as difficult.”
