Pilgrim of the Year

May 29 – 10.17pm – MILAN

Italian Saturday, even without Jannik Sinner, at Roland Garros. There will be three Azzurri involved in the singles draw, each with their own good chances. The first to take the field will be the one who boasts the highest ranking, number 10 on the scoreboard Flavio Cobolli. The Roman will face the n.18 seeded Learner Tien on Philippe Chatrier, at 12pm. It will be the second meeting between the two players, after the American had clearly won the previous one, last October on the hard court in Beijing. But on the Parisian clay things could be different, as Flavio also specified: “The clay is my surface, I will have to exploit this factor against him”. Trying to give further confidence to the other two Italians in the race.

Matteo Berrettini, recovering after two excellent first rounds, will face Francisco Comesana, Darderi’s executioner in the second round, on Simonne Mathieu. Theirs will be the second match of the day from 11am, after Sakkari-Chwalinska. They will take to the field no earlier than 1pm, in what is the first match they will play against. At stake is an eighth against Landaluce or Juan Manuel Cerundolo, engaged as the third match on Court 7. Court 14 will instead be the scene of the match between Matteo Arnaldi and Raphael Collignon. This is the third appearance in a third round Slam for the Italian, first for the Belgian. They will play their third match from 11am, after Francisco Cerundolo-Svajda and Kalinskaya-Osorio. They will then take to the pitch at around 3.30pm. There is no precedent between the two of them either.

The main attraction of the day, however, will be on Suzanne Lenglen: Moise Kouame’s match. The class of 2009, French hope, will face Alejandro Tabilo around 3pm, as the third match from 11am, after the intriguing Jovic-Osaka and the world no.1 Aryna Sabalenka, opposite Daria Kasatkina. The program of the Tiafoe-Faria camp will close: the winner would be Arnaldi’s opponent in a possible third round. Sabalenka will play on Lenglen “because” of a hostess. In fact, it will be Diane Parry, the last Frenchwoman left on the draw, who will steal the show against Philippe Chatrier, in the second match, against the No. 6 seed Amanda Anisimova. Around 2pm. Not before 4pm it will then be the turn of the reigning champion Coco Gauff, opposite the n.28 of the draw Anastasia Potapova. In the evening session, not before 8.15pm, the fourth strength of the tournament Felix Auger-Aliassime, who has the highest ranking among the players at the top of the draw, will challenge Brandon Nakashima. And finally, the second match on Court 7 is worth mentioning, also for issues that go beyond tennis, between Diana Shnaider and Oleksandra Oliynykova, at around 1pm.
