Around eleven o’clock a major panic broke out at the animal shelter in Laren. The animals flew wildly through the cages and there was loud cackling. A local fox had jumped over the two-metre high. The predator holed up in the infirmary, where the weakest residents stay.
The fox targeted ‘Kip’, an older chicken who is blind in one eye. Kip did not survive the attack. Immediately afterwards it was the turn of the white duck Donald. The duck was bitten on its wing, but then neighbor Esther took action.
Attack with a slipper
She heard the noise from a distance and didn’t hesitate for a moment. When she went to look, she saw the fox walking through the shelter, looking for the next prey. Esther immediately intervened: she screamed at the top of her lungs and threw her slipper at the fox.
The fox initially showed little respect and continued to watch the rabbits and chickens. Only when Esther entered the infirmary did the fox take the lead. Thanks to her quick action, the damage was limited and Duck Donald was saved.
