At FC Bayern they are looking for a striker with stature and a certain goal guarantee. There is an ideal candidate for exactly this profile.
When Robert Lewandowski left FC Bayern for Barcelona in the summer of 2022, his story seemed to have been told for the Munich team. The Pole wanted to experience something new again, Bavaria wanted a change. The farewell was not quiet, sometimes even bitter. A return seemed impossible.
Four years later, the idea of him returning to Bayern suddenly sounds surprisingly logical. Not as a nostalgic PR campaign. Not as a sentimental attempt to copy past successes. But as a sober answer to a problem that Bayern, despite Harry Kane, has not solved to this day. Because the German record champions don’t have a striker problem. He has a backup problem.
With Kane, Bayern has one of the best center forwards in the world. The Englishman guarantees goals, structure and reliability. At the same time, the past two seasons have also shown how dependent Munich has become on him. As soon as Kane is missing, has to be rested or is not at his best, Bayern’s offense immediately loses clarity.
The loan from Nicolas Jackson was expensive, but the success was clear. A further commitment of the Senegalese is excluded. Jonah Kusi-Asare, a talented striker, is returning to the German record champions after a loan spell at Fulham, but the 18-year-old has not been able to show more than a beginning. That is still not enough for the demands of Munich residents.
Bavaria doesn’t need anyone for the future, just the present
The real question is therefore not: Who is Bayern’s striker of the future? But: Who can meaningfully relieve Kane without creating new construction sites? This is exactly where Lewandowski becomes interesting for Munich.
A younger striker of the caliber of Robert Lewandowski is too expensive for the role of substitute. With Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United there should be a flexible player for the attack who can play both on the wing and in the center of the attack. However, the Englishman is about to reach an agreement with FC Barcelona to replace Lewandowski.
Lewandowski also knows the club, the Bundesliga and the pressure of expectations. Above all, this time he would no longer have to be the center of attention. This is exactly what makes today’s situation fundamentally different from that in summer 2022.
