Since January 1, 2025, it became mandatory to purchase an environmental vignette if a driver wanted to enter the Eurometropolis. Anyone who does not have a vignette on the windscreen risks a fine.
When it was introduced, communication did not run smoothly and now there appears to be a lot of confusion again. “Many people think that such a vignette is no longer necessary, but nothing could be further from the truth,” says provincial councilor Kurt Himpe. The Constitutional Council now declared the law invalid, not because of the content, but because of the procedure. All motorists who want to drive in a French low-emission zone must therefore still have a vignette. “Hopefully communication will be better in the future.”
