Iranian media have reported explosions in the southwestern part of the country, including near the port city of Bushehr. An American drone was reportedly shot down there on Thursday. Bushehr is home to the Iranian nuclear power plant of the same name, the first nuclear power plant in the Middle East.
Iranian forces are said to have launched missiles in the south of the country. According to Tasnim news agency, the missile attacks targeted vessels that are in or approaching Iranian waters without permission from Iranian authorities. Tehran considers the Strait of Hormuz part of Iranian waters.
A provisional agreement, or not
Earlier on Thursday, the American news site Axios reported that the United States and Iran have reached a provisional agreement have reached an extension of the ceasefire by 60 days. This “memorandum of understanding” would only need to be ratified by President Donald Trump and should provide more room for further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.
However, there is no such agreement yet, Tasnim reported. The news agency cited a source among Iranian negotiators who called the reports “false.” However, there would be a non-binding provisional agreement, which would still have to be followed by final agreements. Tehran has not communicated anything to the mediator Pakistan about a complete and ratified text, the source said. That will only happen if there is actually a memorandum, according to Tasnim.
