Final discussions should already be underway
Signs are increasing: Leverkusen shortly before a coaching coup
May 28, 2026 – 9:48 p.mReading time: 1 min.
After a mixed season, another coaching change is imminent in Leverkusen. The “Werkself” are apparently getting one of the most sought-after coaches on the market.
Bayer Leverkusen is apparently close to signing a new coach. According to the trade magazine “Kicker”, the Bundesliga club is in final negotiations with Andoni Iraola. Sky also reports on negotiations. The 43-year-old Spaniard most recently coached AFC Bournemouth in the English Premier League for three years.
Iraola’s contract with AFC expires. He announced early on that he would be leaving the club after three years. This season he led Bournemouth to sixth place – and thus into the Europa League for the first time. In the first two seasons under him, the club finished twelfth and ninth. Bournemouth have not lost any of their last 18 Premier League games under Iraola. Most recently, Crystal Palace and AC Milan were also considered interested parties.
Filipe Luis has probably decided against Leverkusen
Iraola’s successor at Bournemouth will be former Leipzig coach Marco Rose. He has signed a contract in southern England until 2029. The other candidate for the Leverkusen coaching position, Filipe Luis, is said to have chosen AS Monaco, according to consistent media reports.
The Dane Kasper Hjulmand is currently the coach at Bayer. Despite a contract valid until 2027, he reportedly has no future in Leverkusen. Under him, the team missed out on getting into the Champions League and qualified for the Europa League.
