The English midfielder, whose contract expires with the Reds in a year, has chosen the Nerazzurri club as his first chapter away from England

The blades of the scissors slowly get closer. And the distance between Liverpool’s demand and Inter’s offer for Curtis Jones is becoming increasingly smaller. After having come close to each other last January, in a few weeks it could be the right time to get to checkers between the English midfielder and the Nerazzurri club and yesterday, in Monte Carlo, there was another contact between the Nerazzurri transfer men and those of the Reds. Which has not yet led to a definitive agreement, but at the same time it has still brought Inter and Liverpool closer. The assist, perhaps decisive, comes from Jones’ contract: which expires on June 30, 2027, in just over a year. Technically, in just six months the Englishman would be free to pre-agree with any other company, but the common objective is to anticipate the times. It’s convenient for everyone: Inter, who would find a top European player in their squad by purchasing him at a sale price; to Liverpool, who would avoid losing him to zero; and to Jones himself, who has long given his priority to the Nerazzurri club and has his first experience away from the Premier League in his sights.

the clause dances

Liverpool’s request, for a player whose agreement expires next year, is around 35 million euros. In line with the midfielder’s market value, and perhaps even slightly lower, but not with the contractual situation. On the other hand, Inter is well aware of every factor in the negotiation and has allocated a budget of around 22 million (25 at most with the inclusion of some bonuses) for the purchase of the Englishman. Which, among other things, is assisted by the prosecutor of the company “The Team”, the same one with which Inter found themselves comfortable no later than a year ago when dealing with Akanji and perhaps also in the future for Jhon Lucumì of Bologna. The obstacle, before going through, is represented by Jones’ resale clause: Inter intends to set it at a low percentage, Liverpool would accept to collect a little less immediately in order to have a greater return in the future. But the “expert foreigner” that Beppe Marotta cited as the profile that Inter would be looking for on the transfer market is the Englishman. He is the favorite for midfield, even more than Manu Koné of Roma (who is asking for 50 million euros for the Frenchman).
