Anyone who drove on the A28 between Assen and Beilen this morning probably noticed it. You can ‘normally’ drive through again. In recent weeks, traffic has regularly been backed up due to road works, especially during rush hour. But they are now ready, Rijkswaterstaat said.
“The last roadwork barriers have been removed over the past two nights, so you can now use the A28 in the normal way in both directions,” says Anne van der Meer of Rijkswaterstaat.
Since May 3, Rijkswaterstaat has been carrying out major maintenance on the right-hand lane. Traffic was therefore routed via the left lanes of the A28 in both directions. So the work therefore had consequences for both sides of the A28. There were two narrow lanes available in each direction, where overtaking was not possible. There was also a lower speed limit. This caused several accidents at the roadworks and, above all, many traffic jams.
The asphalt of the highway has been renewed. Furthermore, the guide rails and road markings have been replaced and maintenance has been carried out on the bridge over the Oranjekanaal.
According to the schedule, the work should have been completed last Monday morning, but that timetable was not fully met. “We were indeed delayed by a few more days, and there was a slight delay due to weather conditions,” explains Van der Meer of Rijkswaterstaat.
Gas available everywhere on the Drenthe section of the A28 is not yet possible. Work is also underway on the A28 near Hoogeveen. There the road in a southerly direction is completely closed. That work started on April 26 and would last until June 8.
According to Anne van der Meer, that is still the plan, he says that the work there is on schedule so far.
