The economy in Drenthe developed well last year. With a growth of 2.1 percent, our province performed better than the national average of 1.8 percent.
This is evident from new figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) about the regional economy. Drenthe is one of the provinces that experienced the strongest economic growth. Only Friesland did even better, with a growth of 2.4 percent.
It is striking that several provinces that were still experiencing weak growth or even shrinkage a year earlier are now showing recovery. Groningen also showed growth. This amounts to 1.1 percent, compared to a decline of 2.1 percent in 2024. This ended three years of economic contraction, largely caused by the phasing out of gas extraction.
Developments were not equally positive everywhere. In Flevoland, economic growth actually weakened. Unemployment rose there, more companies went bankrupt and business confidence fell. A similar picture is visible in Zeeland, although both provinces still grew above the national average.
Limburg had the lowest economic growth of all provinces, although the growth rate there was higher than a year earlier.
