Alexander Zverev safely cleared his second hurdle at the French Open.
The world number three, who wants to win the first major title of his career in Paris, won 6:4, 6:2, 6:2 against the Czech Tomas Machac. The 29-year-old from Hamburg reached the third round of Roland Garros for the tenth time in his career and celebrated his 550th victory at tour level.
Zverev left no doubt about the winner from the start of the game on Court Philippe-Chatrier. In the second set, his opponent had to be treated for foot problems and could no longer hold out any hope of a comeback. In the third round, Zverev will face the unseeded Frenchman Quentin Halys.
In the last five editions, Zverev reached at least the semi-finals four times in the French capital, and in 2024 he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. The Spaniard is missing this year due to a wrist injury. Zverev is one of the first contenders for the big coup behind the tour dominator Jannik Sinner from South Tyrol.
Zverev had only played one match against Machac. At the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, he had the better end on his side and now impressed again with his stable play at a high level.
