A 66-year-old Belgian tourist suffering from Alzheimer’s disease was successfully rescued in the mountains on the Portuguese island of Madeira on Tuesday evening. The man had wandered off the path during a hike and became disoriented.

The emergency services received a report about the lost tourist on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Belgian in his sixties was walking near Pico Grande, a mountain area.
Because the man deviated from the marked route and suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, he quickly lost his orientation and got lost in the rugged nature.
Abrasions
The local police and forest guards did not hesitate for a second and started a rescue operation. With success: more than an hour after the emergency call, emergency services were able to locate the man on the hiking trail. Firefighters from Camara de Lobos immediately administered first aid on the spot.
“The man had abrasions and showed signs of exhaustion,” reports the newspaper ‘Diário de Notícias da Madeira’. Due to his health condition, the Belgian was transferred to the emergency department of the local hospital.
According to the newspaper ‘Jornal da Madeira’, this is the second tourist in just 24 hours to lose his way in exactly the same mountain area and have to be rescued.
