The Austrian police are calling on the public for help: after the arrest of a shoe thief in the Baden district, 170 pairs of women’s shoes were seized and the rightful owners are now being sought.

Some suspected victims have already come forward, a police spokeswoman told the German news agency.

The suspect is a 56-year-old man with a criminal record for similar offenses, the spokeswoman said. Detectives assume that he stole a large number of shoes from the doors of homes in the Baden district, south of Vienna.

Rationale

The police have published photos mainly showing sneakers. The man has been transferred to a prison. During his interrogation, he allegedly refused to make a statement, police said. The spokeswoman did not comment on the motive, but pointed out that the man was probably not interested in reselling the shoes.

It mainly concerns stolen sneakers, as can be seen from the photos. © LPD NÖ
