Danish cycling star Jonas Vingegaard flexed his muscles on the Giro trip to Switzerland and extended his lead in the overall classification.
The 29-year-old from the Visma-Lease a Bike team achieved his fourth victory of the day at the mountain finish of the 16th stage, which was only 113 kilometers long and took place entirely on Swiss territory at an altitude of 1,644 meters in Cari, and easily defended the pink jersey.
Already more than four minutes ahead for Vingegaard
In the overall standings, Vingegaard is now a comfortable 4:03 minutes ahead of the Austrian Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM), who crossed the finish line in second place on Tuesday, 1:09 minutes behind. Jai Hindley from Australia (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) finished third in Cari.
On Saturday, Vingegaard took the lead in the Tour of Italy, which ends next Sunday in Rome, with his third stage win. If he doesn’t collapse on the difficult Dolomite stages in the coming days, the two-time Tour and one-time Vuelta winner would be the ninth professional cyclist to win all three major national tours at least once.
Wednesday chance for breakaways
On Wednesday we go back to Italy. After 202 kilometers, the professionals reach Andalo in the province of Trento. The profile is significantly less demanding, which is why outliers have chances. In the end, a fast-paced climber could win.
Ackermann gets out
For Pascal Ackermann, however, the Giro is over. The sprinter did not take part in the 16th stage. The former German champion was plagued by stomach problems. Ackermann would probably only have had a chance of winning on the final stage in Rome anyway.
