No asbestos was found in the smoke released during the serious industrial fire in Tubize (Walloon Brabant) on Monday. This is evident from the samples taken at various places. The municipality is therefore lifting the precautions. Schools and daycare centers will open again from tomorrow.

The fire broke out on Monday in a textile factory on Rue de la Filature, near the center of Tubize. “Despite our initial concerns, it has now been established that there were no asbestos particles in the large plumes of smoke created during the fire. Although there is asbestos in the affected building, the mineral has remained on the site,” said Mayor Samuel D’Orazio.
Due to the suspected toxicity of the smoke, residents of Tubize and neighboring municipalities (including Halle, Pajottegem and Sint-Pieters-Leeuw) were asked to stay indoors, keep doors and windows closed and avoid unnecessary travel. The schools and daycare centers in Tubize remained closed today. The precautions are now lifted.
“The fire is still ongoing and we hope it will be extinguished by Wednesday,” the mayor added.
