The Dallas Cowboys are heading into the new NFL season with great ambitions. However, it is still unclear at which position one of their best offensive linemen of recent years will play.
Tyler Smith, who the Cowboys drafted in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, played mostly left guard in his first four years in the NFL. But he was also lined up as a left tackle from time to time. However, it is still unclear which position he will play in the future. The 25-year-old now spoke about this fact to the official website of the Dallas Cowboys.
“We had great conversations about it,” Smith said. “I know what the deal looks like. That’s the best thing I can ask for – just having that clarity early on. Of course, I have every confidence that we’re going to go out there and do our thing.”
He wasn’t really in the cards, but one should assume that he is initially planned as a guard. After all, he has played more than 900 snaps at left guard in each of the past two years, but also at least 100 as left tackle. This was also the case at the end of last season, when regular left tackle Tyler Guyton missed seven games due to multiple injuries, but is scheduled to play again in Week 1.

Smith excited by youngster
Even in his rookie season, Smith was mainly active as a tackle because then-starter Tyron Smith had to miss early on with a serious knee injury.
However, should Guyton be fit and remain a starter, the offensive line would essentially line itself up: Guyton (LT), Smith (LG), Cooper Beebe (C), Tyler Booker (RG) and Terence Steele (RT). And Smith is particularly convinced of Booker and his further development – he was a first-round pick by the Cowboys in the 2025 draft.
“He approaches every day with the right attitude, he’s a guy that’s always trying to improve and is constantly asking questions. We talk on the phone all the time… I think the sky’s the limit for him in his second year and he’s definitely building on a great starting point from his rookie season,” Smith said of Booker.
Of his own position, Smith concluded: “Ultimately, I’m going to be in the exact position I need to be in,” he said. “I’m absolutely happy with where we are right now.”
