Get ready, because Tuesday will probably be the warmest May 26 ever. It promises to be tropical with temperatures above 30 degrees. But we don’t have to be afraid of sticky nights yet.

It is exceptionally warm for this time of year, says meteorologist Berend van Straaten of Weerplaza. And Tuesday is definitely an outlier. “It will be the hottest day in the series of warm days,” says the meteorologist. “It will be tropical throughout the province. Locally the temperature will even reach 33 degrees.”

Have we already experienced a heat wave?
According to Van Straaten, that is ‘very hot’ for May. It could even be the warmest May 26 in the Netherlands ever and we were already approaching a regional heat wave. We can speak of this if it is above 25 degrees for five days in a row, three of which are above 30 degrees.

Since Friday it has been above 25 degrees every day. On Saturday we reached 30 degrees, but not quite on Monday: at the measuring station in Woensdrecht it was the warmest at 29.2 degrees at the Brabant measuring stations. So not quite a heat wave yet.

No warm nights
Yet we do not have to be afraid of warm sticky nights. “Some cool air will gradually enter the country on Tuesday evening,” says the meteorologist. It cools down at night to about 16 degrees.

Wednesday will also be less hot than Tuesday: we should expect 25 degrees. Still warm, and after Wednesday the temperature will rise a bit again. “It remains dry every day, very sunny and around 27 to 28 degrees.”
