Canada has a home tournament at the World Cup. The team captain will probably still be missing at the start.
Co-host Canada will probably have to do without captain Alphonso Davies at the start of the 2026 World Cup. “Yes,” national coach Jesse Marsch replied on Monday when asked whether FC Bayern’s left-back would play in the home tournament, but he added: “I don’t think he’ll be quite ready on June 12th, but we’ll see.”
Canada will face Bosnia-Herzegovina in Group B at the start in Toronto. This is followed by the duels in Vancouver with Qatar (June 18th) and Switzerland (June 24th). Davies is in the provisional squad, Marsch plans to announce the final squad on May 29th.
Close cooperation with Bavaria
Davies, who suffered a thigh injury in Bayern’s Champions League semi-final exit against Paris Saint-Germain on May 6th and has not played for his home country since March 2025, has not yet arrived at the Canadians’ training camp in Charlotte. Instead, he will continue his rehab in Europe and, according to Marsch, will join him in Edmonton on May 31st.
The Canadian association is working closely with FC Bayern. Marsch spoke of “really good conversations” with Bayern’s sports director Christoph Freund. The German record champions were “very supportive and would like him to play at the World Cup,” said Marsch. The aim is to gradually introduce Davies back to the team without unnecessary risk and to make him fit for action during the home tournament.
