After the transfer of Grischa Prömel, VfB Stuttgart also confirmed that of goalkeeper Marius Funk. The 30-year-old was recently promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga with Energie Cottbus and is expected to complement the goalkeeping team. He received a contract until June 30, 2028. For Funk, the move means a return to his youth club. Between 2011 and 2016 he played through all of VfB’s youth teams from the U15 to the U21.
“After his football training at VfB, Marius Funk gained a lot of experience in different clubs and is now returning to Stuttgart as a seasoned professional. We are pleased that Marius will be part of our goalkeeping team in the future and are convinced that he is an important newcomer for us both because of his football skills and his character traits,” said sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth.
Funk added: “I always followed VfB intensively after I left. Whenever possible, I watched the games. In recent years, VfB has developed from a difficult phase into a top club in Germany and is now back where it belongs with this force of fans, the stadium and the city. Now I’m really looking forward to returning and would like to do my part to continue on the path we’ve chosen.” As of now, the veteran is one of five goalkeepers in the VfB squad for next season. Dennis Seimen returns from his loan from SC Paderborn and is expected to replace Alexander Nübel, youngster Florian Hellstern could be loaned out.
