The province of Drenthe plans to reserve 50 million euros for the Lower Saxony line. The railway line that should better connect the north and east of the country with the rest of the country and Germany.

With this, Drenthe wants to take responsibility on behalf of the region for the contribution to the Multi-Year Program Infrastructure, Space and Transport (MIRT) exploration of the rail route. Reserving the amount of money is a proposal to the Provincial Council.

The Lower Saxony Line will improve the accessibility of cities and villages in Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel and offer opportunities for work, education, housing and the economy. Last year, the government allocated 2.1 billion euros for its realization.

A MIRT exploration of the railway route also started last year. The 50 million euros is intended to contribute to this. This amount was offered by the region in the regional bid, the province now takes responsibility for raising the sum of money.

The regional bid underlines that the region wants to play a major role in building (new) homes, campus development, developing business parks and making healthcare and educational institutions more accessible.

How the millions will be spent is still being discussed with the governments involved. The proposal will be discussed by the Provincial Council in June. A decision will be made on July 1.
