The Telekom Baskets Bonn missed an early entry into the playoff semi-finals of the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). After their 70:82 (31:36) away defeat in Würzburg, there is a showdown on the Rhine.
The Rhinelanders were able to turn game three in the “best of five” series against the Fitness First Würzburg Baskets with a strong third quarter (19:7) and thus gain a 2-1 series lead. They were no longer able to do that on Sunday at the first match point against the home team – on the contrary: the deficit of five points at half-time grew to 13 points before the final round.
Bonn’s Joel Aminu was the best thrower with 16 points
Now, 13 points ten minutes before the end of a basketball game is no guarantee of victory, but when, like the Bonn team did on Sunday, you only have one player who scores double figures, catching up becomes difficult. At the end of the game, Bonn had the best thrower in Joel Aminu (16 points), but not the winner.
The victory deservedly belonged to the home team, with four players scoring in double figures. On the field, this was mainly due to the accuracy that Würzburg displayed beyond the three-point line. From there, the hosts managed eleven of their 30 attempts, the Bonn team only managed five of 31. That’s 18 points less, and the Rhinelanders were also weaker in the circle.
Head coach Marko Stankovic’s team performed well at the free throw line and in rebounding, but that was ultimately not enough to force a decision in the fourth playoff duel with Würzburg. It must now take place next Wednesday from 8.30 p.m. in the Telekom Dome in Bonn. Then it will be decided in overtime at the latest who will be defending champion Bayern Munich’s semi-final opponent from May 30th.
