One of the oldest buildings in Oosterhout is for sale: the ‘Geel Huis’ on Leijsenstraat. Resident Mrs. Pauwvliet fell in love with it in the 1980s: “It was mainly the external appearance, the rural and the romance. I saw a photo in the newspaper and said to my husband: I want to see this house.”
That first impression turned out to be decisive. During the viewing, her husband was also immediately sold. “The side facing the street, the old toll house, particularly appealed to him. The back of the building has the character of a farm. We were particularly struck by the romantic appearance of the house.”
From inn to toll house
The farmhouse dates from 1557 and has had various functions over the centuries, such as an inn and toll house. That history is still visible. “You can clearly see that on the outside. It could easily be an inn again.”
Many authentic elements have also been preserved in the house. For example, old stable doors are still visible in the living room and there are original tiles. “Those stable doors used to belong to the cowshed. And there are old fireplaces, tiles and doors. It’s actually teeming with old details.”

During the renovation, a conscious decision was made to preserve the character of the building, but to make it suitable for modern living. “It has clearly not been renovated in a modern style, but it is comfortable. With a modern kitchen and bathroom.”
Favorite places in the house
The house provided space for the family and work for many years. Her husband ran an art shop in the former part of the inn. “There was a beautiful old fireplace there. And there is also a very old wine cellar with a worn-out staircase.”
She herself had several favorite places. “The living room of course, but also the bedroom. That is really the most beautiful bedroom I have ever had. You can look out over the garden from your bed.”

Everyone knows it
After 36 years, that period is now coming to an end. Her husband died more than a year and a half ago, after which the house became too big. “Our children have been out of the house for a long time. It became too big for me. It is with a heavy heart that I am selling it. They are beautiful memories, but not something to look at every day.”
The farmhouse has a living area of 433 square meters and is located on a plot of 3674 square meters. There are nine rooms in total, including five bedrooms and two bathrooms. The asking price is 1,750,000 euros.

According to Pauwvliet, the building offers many possibilities. “You can live here and, for example, start a practice. I hope that people will come who can appreciate this and live in it with love. Not that everything will be demolished.”
According to her, the ‘Yellow House’ is unique in Oosterhout. “The old Oosterhouters know it all. And everyone who comes in here says: gosh, how beautiful.”
