Richard Vogel at the Tschio in Aachen

As of: May 24, 2026 • 5:11 p.m

Richard Vogel triumphed in the Grand Prix at the TSCHIO in Aachen and preserved his chance of becoming the second show jumper in history to win the “Grand Slam of Show Jumping”.

The European champion prevailed on Sunday on his top horse United Touch in the jump-off with the Argentinian José Maria Larocca (Finn Lente) and his partner Sophie Hinners (Iron Dames Singclair). Vogel was 1.79 seconds ahead of Larocca.

Every German dreams of winning the Grand Prix in Aachen.

Richard Vogel after his success at the Aachen Grand Prix

“I’m overwhelmed right now, I really had to cry – tears of joy, of course,” said Vogel on WDR: “We’ve had this Grand Prix in our sights for many weeks. A United that fights like that doesn’t happen often in a riding career. This is a moment that only comes once in a lifetime.”

Second major success for Vogel

After his victory in March at the Dutch Masters in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, he celebrated the second major success of the highly prized series in the Soers. Vogel is guaranteed a bonus of 500,000 euros. We continue at the Spruce Meadows Masters in Calgary/Canada (September 9th to 13th), but on the way there is the World Championships in Aachen (August 11th to 23rd) – another goal for the outstanding duo Vogel and United Touch.

Thieme on Chakira in sixth place

That prevailed on Sunday against the assembled world leaders. 24 of the top 25 in the world rankings took part in the replacement event for the CHIO, which is taking a break this year due to the World Championships. From a German perspective, alongside Vogel and Hinners, André Thieme (Chakaria) also performed well in sixth place. Daniel Deußer (Otello) only came 16th after a faultless first round.

After Briton Scott Brash, Vogel could become the second show jumper in the tournament series, which has been held since 2013, to win three majors in a row. Brash triumphed in Geneva, Aachen and Calgary in 2014/15, and has also been jumping in ‘s-Hertogenbosch since 2018.

With two more victories, the 29-year-old will receive a bonus of two million euros and an entry into the history books of equestrian sport. Like Larocca and Hinners, the man from Mannheim made no mistakes in the two rounds. The trio also got through the play-off without a drop, but Vogel was fastest on United Touch.

The tournament cannot be called CHIO this year

This year the Grand Prix was ridden at the replacement tournament for the CHIO, the Tschio. The event is not allowed to use the title CHIO because the tournament is not a Concours Hippique International Officiel because there is a much smaller event without the team competitions for national teams due to the World Championships in August.

“We shouldn’t have called ourselves that this year,” explained Aachen sports director Birgit Rosenberg. Now the tournament is called the way most people in Aachen pronounce it anyway: Tschio.
