The municipality of Groningen will accommodate asylum seekers for three nights for whom there is no room in the reception center in Ter Apel, reports the ANP news agency. This concerns the night of Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
The reception is at the request of asylum minister Bart van den Brink and will take place in the Hanzeplaza conference center. It is not yet known how many asylum seekers will be involved. According to the municipality, this depends on the influx, according to ANP.
The Groningen municipality of Stadskanaal and the Drenthe municipality of Aa en Hunze also opened locations for the reception of asylum seekers in recent nights, to prevent people from having to sleep outside on the grass of the Ter Apel registration center. This involved groups of approximately fifty to more than a hundred people who stayed one night in the relevant municipalities, after which they were taken back to Ter Apel in the morning.
Just like on Friday, the Red Cross set up four party tents on Saturday morning for shelter from the sun. Extra water is also distributed. Temperatures could reach 29 degrees on Saturday. The tents are not intended for sleeping.
