Harry Styles is causing a stir with his “Residency” concept: The tour for his album “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally” only takes place in selected cities, but with several dates in a row. Expectations rose at the album release party in Manchester: instead of on a front stage, the former One Direction singer performed in the center of the audience, almost as if he himself were part of the dancing crowd. After the one-night-only show in March, the world tour started on May 16th in Amsterdam – and fans expressed their disappointment on social media: “Imagine paying 350 euros for a restricted view.” For some visitors, this is not a fantasy, but reality. TikToks show shots of standing rooms directly in front of the stage, from which Harry Styles repeatedly disappears from view. The cause is bridges that connect different parts of the stage and block the fans’ view.
The frustration of some fans was already great after the high prices in official ticket sales: those who had gotten hold of the hotly contested tickets often saw resale offers in the same category at significantly lower prices. When it was first released, many fans bought tickets for several dates and venues, only to then choose the one that was better located and resell the rest. This meant that shortly before the tour started, tickets were available again for almost all seat categories – some at cheaper conditions. In addition, fans have to endure long distances as well as travel and hotel costs because the static tour planning means his fans now travel around the world to attend his concerts.

Harry Styles’ team has now responded to the complaints about poor visibility. A representative gave the following statement to TMZ: “The stage concept was designed to allow fans freedom of movement and the ability to experience the show from a variety of positions, rather than being limited to one angle. This open, free-flowing experience has always been an essential part of Styles’ live shows. A small area of specific positions appear to have a restricted view. These areas will now be thoroughly reviewed and, where possible, adjusted in compliance with safety precautions.”
At Harry Styles concerts, it has already become a tradition for fans to interact and dance with each other in so-called “disco pits” instead of focusing exclusively on the singer. This experience should probably be reinforced by the stage design – apparently not entirely successful so far. The reactions on social media sound muted: Styles’ new concept seems to have a few catches. However, there is hope: the strength of the “Residencies” lies in the fact that sustainable improvements are possible, from which shows in the next cities could also benefit.
