After over 30 years it’s over: Aqua announce the end of their career. Here is an overview of the information.
Aqua draw a line. In an Instagram post, the Danish group announced that they were ending their time as a live act. More than three decades after it was founded in 1995, the moment has come to close the chapter.
Farewell on Instagram
In the Instagram post, the Aqua members thank their fans and look back on their years together. They say they have traveled the world several times and sung with millions of people. There were memories that would last. Anyone who has been traveling together for such a long time will eventually learn when it is important to protect what they have created. Now feels like the right moment to say goodbye – as long as the memories are fresh and the affection for the music and for each other remains intact.

From a global hit to a legal dispute with Mattel
Aqua formed in Denmark in 1995. Two years later her debut album “Aquarium” was released, which delivered a worldwide hit with “Barbie Girl”. The song about the doll and her friend Ken landed at the top of the charts in numerous countries. The toy manufacturer Mattel sued the group over the use of the brand name, but failed in court: a judge deemed the piece a permissible parody.
This was followed by the albums “Aquarius” (2000) and “Megalomania” (2011). In total, the band is said to have sold around 33 million records.
Late return through the “Barbie” movie
“Barbie Girl” received a new wave of attention in 2023. Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice used parts of the song for their single “Barbie World”.
The track was also featured on the soundtrack to the movie “Barbie”. This means that the original reached a younger audience who previously only knew the song from their parents’ radio.
