“The Master!”, “Flawless Voice!”, “Beautiful, short and so wonderfully mellow-funky… just like the man himself!! This is the kind of material the family should be releasing!” or “Hearing a new Prince song from his final era (honestly my favorite) feels like the longest journey of the soul…finally coming home, and there it IS…Love you, Prince.” Prince fans are excited about “Unbeknownst 2 U,” a newly discovered Vault song from Prince, who died in 2016. But stop. As the uploader of the YouTube video couldn’t say clearly enough, and what the fan site “Housequake” also points out: This ballad is an AI song.
Prince fans are in an uproar
Unfortunately a very good one, no doubt. The voice sounds ORIGINAL like Prince. “Unbeknownst 2 U” is arranged like a ballad from around 1985, wonderfully theatrical and bombastic, like “Empty Room” or the recordings that led to the 1986 album “Parade”. Actually a good reason for the estate to now think about a “Parade” reissue for the album’s 40th anniversary.
In any case, the “Housequake” operators are in turmoil. “If this AI-generated Prince song shows where AI technology is today, we’re basically pretty screwed,” you write. “We now have to pretty much take Londell McMillan’s word for upcoming releases that they are, in fact, authentic, unreleased Prince tracks from the Vault. All anyone would have to do is write lyrics and music in the style of parade-era from 1986, and voilà – we would have a ‘lost outtake’ for an SDE release. Additionally, the urgency to get the Vault tracks out as quickly as possible is now greater than ever.”
Londell McMillan is one of the estate’s managers and is instrumental in the release plan – which many fans criticize because the estate doesn’t manage enough Prince output. However, the fact that the estate administrators are actually releasing AI songs just to fuel Prince releases seems very absurd – regardless of the fact that this would be an insinuation. Sites like princevault.com are pretty well informed about all recordings.
Many followers of the “Housequake” page are hoping that “Unbeknownst 2 U” isn’t an AI song after all. However, “Housequake” refers to a statement from the uploader: “This was a social experiment to see whether AI was a SOUL MAN and whether it had what it took.”
Everyone can now decide for themselves whether the AI has what it takes.
