DARA wins the ESC 2026 in Vienna with 516 points. What the title “Bangaranga” means and what message is behind it.
“Surrender to the blinding lights” sings 27-year-old DARA in her song “Bangaranga” and wins the ESC for Bulgaria. But who is DARA and what is behind her song?
DARA, whose real name is Darina Nikolaeva Yotova, scored 516 points at the Eurovision final in Vienna. This puts them significantly ahead of second-placed Israel with a total of 343 points and Romania with 296 points, and takes home the first ever ESC win for Bulgaria.
(Not) a surprise win
For many, DARA’s victory is a surprise. However, she has long since made a name for herself with her music in her home country: after coming third in the Bulgarian “X-Factor” in 2015, she signed her first record deal. She then made it to the top of the national charts again and again and in 2025 to a coach’s chair on “The Voice of Bulgaria”.
With “Bangaranga”, DARA brings a danceable song that sounds like nonsense at first glance, but has a strong political level: the title means “chaos” and “riot” and comes from Jamaican patois. Patois is a so-called Creole language that was formed during the colonial period, combining elements of West African languages and English and thus developing into a completely new means of communication.
Multicultural to revolution
DARA uses the art of cultural reformation for its purposes: It combines the energetic effect of the Patois word with instrumental folklore elements and refers to the “Kukeri” tradition in its performance at the ESC. In Bulgaria, men costumed with animal masks parade through the villages to drive away evil spirits.
DARA also wants to drive away evil. In the ESC press conference after her victory, she gave the advice: It’s about overcoming fears and breaking out of your comfort zone. “The first rule is: anything is possible.”
DARA proves this empowerment with her performance, which brings her a historic victory for Bulgaria and enthusiasm in the audience, which makes her the favorite in the televoting. The German jury rewarded her with a 10-point rating; Only Israel does better.
DARA invites its listeners to “Welcome to the riot”. “I’m a Bangaranga” loosely translated means “I am a troublemaker”. Her song is nothing less than a call for revolution, to stand up for yourself and be self-confident.
