Erja Häkkinen, 64, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, talks about her past and current health in an interview with Ilta-Sanomi.
Häkkinen tells the newspaper that he is doing well and that the illness has not really hindered his life.
– The illness has not hindered everyday life in any way. Sometimes, of course, there are moments that I wonder what I was doing, but after five minutes I remember. There is nothing more serious than that, says Häkkinen.
– It’s not that far. I have good doctors, and I have received good tips. I’m not worried.
Häkkinen has previously told Iltalehti about his memory disorder. The diagnosis came as a surprise to him, but the disease has not discouraged or scared him.
– The doctors have said that there is nothing wrong with me yet. Then there’s trouble when it comes to the fact that I’m walking down that road and suddenly I don’t know where I am.
Now Häkkinen tells IS that the described situations have not occurred so far. On the contrary, walks keep the mind fresh.
Häkkinen has spoken openly about his illness in public. He has previously told Iltalehti that he wants to be an example that life does not end with a memory disease diagnosis.
According to Häkkinen, the lack of courage to accept bad news is not the only reason why people do not seek help in time.
– Many say that they don’t even know where they would go. That is why more awareness must be gained.
– I have repeated that to everyone, that help is available if you want it. They don’t come home to offer help. Go ahead, that’s the only thing. It doesn’t help at all to stay home and mourn, Häkkinen encouraged.
