Oscar-winning director Emerald Fennell (“Saltburn”) stages Emily Brontë’s only novel from 1847 as an exhilarating, complex romantic drama.
The focus is on the story of Cathy Earnshaw and Heathcliff, two people who grow up on the windswept Yorkshire moors and seem destined for each other. Heathcliff, taken into Cathy’s family as an impoverished orphan, develops a forbidden love, driven by longing and passion, which over the years increases into obsession and finally madness. Class differences, social expectations and mutual injuries drive both into a spiral of desire and destruction.
Stars over stars
Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi embody the unlikely couple with an intensity that does justice to the material. Fennell does not rely on a faithful adaptation, but rather on a free reinterpretation. This atmosphere is supported by an original album by Charli XCX, who composed specifically for the film, giving the Victorian setting a contemporary sound.
The film, released on Valentine’s Day, was a success at the box office, grossing over $240 million worldwide. “Wuthering Heights” has been available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD since May 5th.
