American golfer Scheffler wins Masters for the first time

American golfer Scottie Scheffler has won the Masters for the first time. The world No. 1 finished the final round at the Augusta National Golf Club with 71 strokes for a total of 278 strokes, ten below the course average. He was three strokes ahead of Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy and won his first major tournament.

McIlroy made sure that Scheffler still had to give his best on the second part of the track in Augusta. The Northern Irishman, who after three days had needed ten more strokes than Scheffler, finished with a round of 64 strokes, eight below the track average. He hit six birdies and one eagle and had the best round of the entire tournament.

However, Scheffler did not let himself be fooled. The 25-year-old American, who had already won three tournaments on his way to the Masters, birdies on holes 3 and 7 and then a bogey on 10. With birdies on 14 and 15, he ensured that it wouldn’t get much more exciting, although it was putting on the last hole is a chore. After two misses it was hit.

Scheffler can add a record premium of 2.7 million dollars, converted almost 2.5 million euros. He also gets the famous green jacket.

Tiger Woods finished his 24th participation in 47th place. Just like Saturday, the five-time Masters winner had a disappointing day of 78 strokes, six above the track average. With 301 strokes, he needed 23 more than winner Scheffler over four days. Woods made his surprising return to the Masters after his serious car accident fourteen months ago.
