Around 400 demonstrators came to the emergency shelter tonight to express their dissatisfaction. The protest started peacefully, but got out of hand around 8:45 p.m.
An NH reporter on site saw several torches and heavy fireworks being thrown at the town hall. “A burning torch is now on the roof and you can hear demonstrators shouting: everything is going to catch fire.”
Several bushes near the emergency shelter were on fire. “The fire is getting bigger and can no longer be controlled,” our reporter saw. The fire brigade tried to arrive on the scene, but was stopped for a short time by a group of demonstrators. The fire brigade has now extinguished the fire.
The Mobile Unit (ME) carried out several charges, after which the demonstrators fled. Police indicate that the situation is under control and that one demonstrator has been arrested so far.
Emergency order until tomorrow morning
Mayor Mark Verheijen of the municipality of Wijdemeren, which includes Loosdrecht, issued an emergency order tonight due to ‘serious disturbances’ in front of the town hall.
According to the emergency order, everyone must leave the town hall by order of the police. The emergency order applies until 9 a.m. tomorrow morning, ‘unless the mayor notices earlier that the danger has passed’.
