A large fire is raging in a thatched roof at a farmhouse on the Lheeweg in Dwingeloo. This produces a lot of smoke.

The Drenthe Safety Region has sent an NL Alert for residents of the village of Lhee and a nearby camper place, because the smoke is moving in that direction.

The residents were able to leave the house in time, a fire brigade spokesperson said. The pets have also been brought to safety.

The fire brigade received the first report around 7.45 pm, and after ten minutes the fire was scaled up to a major fire. More than ten fire brigades from the region responded to the fire.

The fire started in the home, but quickly spread to the roof. It is still unclear how the fire could have started.
