Chess grandmaster Matthias Blübaum has to look for a new Bundesliga team after his club withdraws. According to his own statement, he was caught off guard by the decision.
Chess star Matthias Blübaum, the only German participant in the Candidates Tournament in Cyprus for the World Championship, was completely surprised by the withdrawal of his Bundesliga club Schachfreunde Deizisau. “In fact, I didn’t know anything about my club’s withdrawal until May 1st,” he said in an interview with the Württemberg Chess Association. v.
Blübaum moved to the South Germans nine years ago, and the club ended the current season in fifth place. In addition to the Schachfreunde Deizisau, third place in the table, the Schachfreunde Wolfhagen, is also withdrawing from the Bundesliga.
“Of course I think it’s a shame because I’ve been with the club for a really long time – I moved to Deizisau in 2017,” emphasized the 29-year-old. But he wants to stay in the Bundesliga, although he didn’t want to reveal which club he will move the pieces on the board for in the future: “I will most likely play in the Bundesliga next season – but I don’t want to reveal anything until it’s official.”
Blübaum draws conclusions after the chess candidates tournament
Matthias Blübaum recently finished the Candidates Tournament for the World Championship as sixth out of a total of eight grandmasters. The new World Cup challenger is the Uzbek Javohir Sindarov, who won ahead of Anish Giri and Fabiano Caruana and will therefore challenge Dommaraju Gukesh.
“I think I will never forget such an important tournament. I think, above all, I will remember the atmosphere at this event,” said Blübaum, looking back at the top-ranked tournament.
Although he only lost two of the 14 games, he also drew twelve times. “Of course I would have really liked to win a few games, but overall it was okay.”
