Injury concerns at FC Bayern: Alphonso Davies is out again. Even the World Cup with Canada is apparently in danger for the defender.
Alphonso Davies suffered another muscle injury in the Champions League semi-final exit against Paris Saint-Germain. This time the left rear thigh is affected. Sports director Christoph Freund said after the 1-0 win in Wolfsburg: “It’s of course very bitter, especially for him and of course for us too.” Davies fought his way back from his serious knee injury, but was repeatedly set back by muscle problems. “He never really got into a rhythm,” Freund continued.
The Bayern boss also explained: “Of course it hurts and it’s of course a difficult phase for him mentally at the moment. But we will all support him as best we can and hope that he comes back stable.”
Davies suffered a torn cruciate ligament with cartilage damage in his right knee in March 2025. After nine months he returned in December. However, further setbacks followed. In February 2026 he tore a muscle fiber in his right rear thigh. During his comeback in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Atalanta Bergamo, he was injured again and suffered a thigh strain. Now the next injury followed in the left thigh.
Coach Vincent Kompany said after the Wolfsburg game: “Physically I’m not worried. He’ll come back, everything will be fine again. But mentally it’s just incredibly difficult.” Davies had already spoken openly about his problems during his rehab after tearing his cruciate ligament. In a video on his YouTube channel at the time, he said: “I had a mental breakdown. I don’t know what happened to me. I took a shower and then burst into tears.”
Even after the injury against Bergamo, the Bayern professional was emotional and still cried on the pitch. Kompany said about the current situation: “Sometimes it’s not the really big injuries that are difficult. It’s these smaller injuries that keep coming back, where sometimes you get an extra tick mentally.”
The Bayern coach added: “But well, he has to turn the switch again very quickly. Let’s see what happens towards the World Cup. There is no other way and we will help, we will support him.” During the World Cup, which will also be held in Davies’ home country of Canada, his team will face Bosnia-Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland.
