When Luka Vuskovic left the Volksparkstadion stage, fans, teammates and coaches stood up. After the 3:2 (1:1) against SC Freiburg, the HSV team sent the Croatian young star to the north curve to the Hamburg hardcore fans to receive their homage. Rarely has a loan player been taken to heart as much as Vuskovic.
And the 19-year-old, who is on loan from Tottenham without an option to buy, had a suitable farewell gift ready. The defender hammered a free kick into the Freiburg goal to make it 2-1 and then held his number 44 jersey into the HSV corner. Vuskovic was probably the crucial piece of the puzzle in saving the promoted team.
“This is a special day for me. The fans were so impressive. I got so much love from the fans, from the players, from the support staff,” Vuskovic enthused on “DAZN”. But he couldn’t hold out hope for another year in the HSV jersey: “You never know in football, but the chance is very, very small. I played for the club this season. Every game was very special. It was very nice. Hamburg is my second home.”
Vuskovic, who scored six goals in 29 appearances for HSV, increased his market value with the Rothosen fivefold to 60 million euros. In any case, his teammates will miss him in the summer. “Luka is a very fine guy. He is my neighbor in the dressing room. He is an outstanding footballer. We had fun with him every moment, every second,” said HSV veteran Bakery Jatta (27).
