SC Magdeburg can slowly turn the champagne cold for the championship celebration. The leaders of the Handball Bundesliga won 41:28 (21:12) against HSV Hamburg and can win the title early after the international break. A draw is enough for the Champions League winner in the home game against direct rivals SG Flensburg-Handewitt on May 21st.
Three days after moving back into the Final Four of the premier class in Cologne in mid-June, the SCM left no stone unturned against Hamburg and dominated their opponents from the start. The game was already decided at halftime with a nine-goal lead. The best thrower for the winner was backcourt ace Omar Ingi Magnusson with eleven goals. The Icelander impressed with a 100 percent throw rate.
With four games still to play, the Elbestadters are seven points ahead of the Flensburg team with 56:4 points, who at least maintained their minimal chance of winning the championship with a 38:30 win against TBV Lemgo Lippe the day before.
Berlin wins top game in Kiel
One point behind is cup winner Füchse Berlin, who confidently mastered the away hurdle against record champions THW Kiel. With 35:28 (18:16), the capital club consolidated third place in the table and underlined its ambitions to take part in the Champions League next season.
The best THW thrower was Harald Reinkind with seven goals. World handball player Mathias Gidsel scored eight times in the fast-paced game for the Berliners, who, like Magdeburg, qualified for the final tournament in the Champions League during the week.
The foxes started with concentration. At 12:8 (17th), the lead was four goals for the first time. Pivot player Mijajlo Marsenic and the two outside players Tim Freihöfer and Hakun West av Teigum provided accents and goals.
Kiel catches up, but can’t get past
After the break, the North Germans kept coming back. Rune Dahmke equalized at 25:25 (49th), but a little later this momentum was lost again.
