Itten shoots Fortuna to victory – but is missing against Fürth

Fortuna Düsseldorf wins clearly against SV Elversberg on Sunday. After the home win, the team in Fürth will have to do without goalscorer Cedric Itten.
Fortuna Dusseldorf achieved a home win against SV Elversberg. Düsseldorf went into the half-time break with a 2-0 lead – after an own goal from Elversberg central defender Florian Le Joncour in the 26th minute and a header from Cedric Itten in the 43rd minute.
After the break, the striker stepped up in the 51st minute and made it 3-0 for Düsseldorf after a slip by Elversberg goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof. After a corner for the Saarlanders in the first minute of added time, Tim Oberdorf was able to avert the goalless defeat with a consolation goal, but it wasn’t enough for Elversberger.
With Fortuna’s victory, the team from Saarland missed an important step towards the club’s first promotion to the Bundesliga. With a win in Düsseldorf, coach Vincent Wagner’s team would have virtually secured direct promotion because of the better goal difference. Düsseldorf left the relegation zone before the last matchday and, with the win, put itself in a good starting position for the relegation final in Fürth.
But not everything went as planned at Fortuna either: double goalscorer Cedric Itten picked up his fifth yellow card after a foul in midfield in the 64th minute – he hit Elversberg’s Lukas Petkov in the Achilles tendon. The Düsseldorf top scorer will therefore be missing from the important away game in Fürth on the last matchday.
